• Interactive virtual walk or 360 video, which to choose?

    Virtual walks

Virtual walks are a well known way to promote different places and facilities. One of the most popular services of this kind is Google Street View, due to which we are able to visit almost the whole World.

What do we gain by this technology?

Well, we can check a particular place without the need to travel there and without any cost.

Unfortunately, with this technology, except for photos, there are no other options and interactions such as voice, sounds and VR mode.

Below you can visit Dubai Marina, as a great example of using Google Street View:

Before going on holiday or business trip it’s really worth to check your destination with the Google Street View, however you should check the date of taking photos, because they can appear out-of-date.

Another great solution is virtual tour, e.g. in hotel facilities. Here we can see much better quality and a few additional options, such as sound, additional menu, VR mode, with which you can use your mobile phone to start a journey.

The main advantages of those two technologies are:

    -excellent quality of pictures,

-freedom of movement, it means that we decide where we want to go,

-this technology doesn’t require a lot of space on your hard drive and fast internet connection, due to which this is very affordable solution.

Now let’s look at 360 Video.

Certainly, many people have already seen the 360 movies, because right now it is becoming more and more popular in social media. The main advantage of 360 video is that we become a camera operator and we decide which scene we are watching.

Of course, in the video all the elements are moving, there can also be a director and actors, everything that we can find in traditional movie.

There are also some downsides of this technology:

    1. The 360 cameras haven’t been so long on the market and they don’t have as good quality, (resolution and dynamic range) as a traditional camera e.g. Canon C200 or Sony FS5.
    2. They also don’t have RAW recording, flat profiles and audio XLR support, due to that 360 cameras can’t compare to traditional cameras.

Below you can find some examples of 360 video used for promotion:

As you can see the quality of 360 video depends on internet connection and it decreases when we don’t have sufficient speed. The 360 cameras have also problems with low light scenes and high contrast scenes.

Is there any other solution on the market?

Yes, there are NewMediaVR projects which combine those two technologies.
